Spraybot interface

A mobile app that allows farm workers to monitor and control an autonomous robot.

Mockup of an app

My role

I led creation of the design system and final, high-fidelity iteration of the app. I also took point on building out our final presentation to stakeholders- from which our team was voted one of the top 2 projects in the Carnegie Mellon University 2022 Human-Computer Interaction cohort.

Context

This was my final capstone project for my human-computer interaction major at Carnegie Mellon University. My team's project was to design an interface that allows farm workers to monitor an autonomous robot that will spray herbicide on a farm.

Our challenge

How might we design a system to easily monitor a robot?

Our solution

Schedule missions, monitor robot progress

Users would be able to select areas of the farm that they would like the robot to spray herbicide over. Once in the field, the farm worker could start the mission and monitor the robot on the live map view.

Troubleshoot any issues

We designed a series of notifications and guided steps to help farm workers deal with any issues that may arise in the field.

Color + the environment

Farm environments are very sunny. I choose green as the basis for our color system because it has high luminance- our eyes are more sensitive to these colors, so they are easier to see especially in environments with high glare, such as sunny farms.

Dark typography on a white background met accessibility standards and was high contrast, ideal for the sun as well.

Clear text hierarchy makes the app easy to read for users who are often on the go.
